Designing a nature-based carbon project begins with a deep understanding of the landscape, from both an ecological and a community perspective.
This is what NatureCo set out to achieve with partners Iora Ecological Solutions and Jatan Sansthan during a recent field visit for Project Khejri, a community-led reforestation and carbon initiative in southern Rajasthan.
Together we conducted an in-depth workshop, field-based assessments and consultations with Gram Panchayats, women’s groups and block-level departments as part of the project’s feasibility assessment.
Key outcomes included:
- Ground-truthing of planting sites, land tenure and community readiness for the project.
- Site visits revealed diverse conditions – from rocky uplands to regenerating commons – which will inform restoration models, species choice and labour needs.
- Insights from local leaders on grazing, migration patterns and community expectations will shape benefit-sharing strategies.
- Co-developed project elements and governance structures with field teams.
- Women’s groups expressed interest in monitoring and stewardship roles, creating space for stronger gender inclusion.
- Strengthened understanding of carbon standards, MRV and benefit-sharing mechanisms.
This trip provided valuable opportunities for field teams to challenge assumptions, align priorities and co-create solutions – reflecting the collaborative nature of project design.
