Project Overview

South-east Brazil

This large-scale native reforestation project aims to restore 4,000 hectares of degraded land across the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado biomes in Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and southern Bahia in Brazil. The project aims to establish 6 million native trees in these globally threatened ecosystems, removing an estimated 2.5 million tCO2 e over a 40-year crediting period.

The Brazil Forest Farmers project aims to create positive change for the local environment and community in a region that has suffered from decades of deforestation and degradation, impacting local ecosystem services. Reforestation is designed to provide habitat for threatened species and increase regional employment and landholder incomes to support approximately 300 local farmers.

CO-BENEFITS

Environmental co-benefits

Native forest restoration across twobiomes will help degraded landscapes recover, reconnect and become moreresilient to climate and environmental change.

Creating habitat
Planting around 80 different local species to provide habitat for a range of insects, birds, reptiles and mammals.
Resilient landscapes
Enhancing vegetation cover, supporting soil carbon recovery, reducing erosion and strengthening biodiversity at the landscape level by creating ecological corridors.
Carbon storage
Sequestration of approximately 2.5 million tCO2e over 40 years, contributing to global carbon reduction targets.

Carbon storage
Sequestration of 10 million tCO2e over 40 years, contributing to global carbon reduction targets.

CO-BENEFITS

Social co-benefits

Grounded in community participation, this project aims to strengthen local livelihoods by actively engaging farmers in reforestation.

Improving local livelihoods
Providing local employment opportunities in nursery management, tree planting, monitoring and forest maintenance, while fostering local enterprises linked to tree planting and restoration services. Landholders will also access an income stream from credits generated.
Building technical capacity and participation in reforestation
Training communities on restoration practices, compliance with Brazilian environmental laws, and sustainable land management to strengthen technical capacity and encourage knowledge sharing.
