Project Overview

Maharashtra, India

This large-scale, community-driven native species reforestation and assisted natural regeneration (ARR) project covers 40,000 hectares across the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India. It is designed to empower forest-dwelling communities to restore, steward and protect their landscapes to strengthen livelihoods, rebuild ecosystems and expand critical tiger and wildlife habitats.

Through a combination of active planting and natural regeneration, the project will restore more than 26 million native trees and generate approximately 10 million high-integrity carbon credits, while improving biodiversity, soil health and water systems in a region long affected by declining agricultural productivity and environmental stress.

ARR interventions will be carried out across over 100 forest communities, enabling Gram Sabhas and community-run nurseries to lead reforestation efforts, strengthen land governance and build long-term stewardship models.

Supporting and restoring native species and habitat for animals including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger, the Gaur and the near threatened Four-horned Antelope.
